Varicose veins usually occur when a valve inside the vein malfunctions. These valves are designed to promote blood flow toward the heart. Sometimes, when the valve fails, blood starts to pool and can cause the vein to enlarge making it look a deep purple colour. 4 out every 5 people who suffer from this problem are women.

The Cause of Varicose Veins

There can be one varicose vein or there can be many. They can be large or small in diameter. The smaller ones create a spider web pattern. Most people experience varicose veins in the legs, usually in the lower calf or thigh. The most common cause of varicose veins is hormonal change. Other factors include obesity, getting older, and standing for long periods of time without taking a break. It also tends to run in families.

Importance of a Good Diet

Diet plays an important role in the treatment of varicose veins. Several foods can be very helpful in minimizing the pain associated with the disease.


Fresh fruit that is rich in vitamin C such as blueberries, strawberries cherries, apples, oranges etc… will reduce the pain.

High fibre diet

Make sure to include whole grain in your daily diet. Buckwheat, oats, brown rice and barley can facilitate bowel movements. Constipation can add pressure to the circulatory system, which can aggravate varicose veins. The recommended intake is 30 grams of fibre per day.


Make sure to steam your vegetables rather than boil them so that they retain the maximum amount of nutrition. Vegetables like spinach, cabbage, carrots and cauliflower contain many important vitamins.

If you consume moderate amounts of ginger, garlic and onions on a daily basis you will help your body to break down a substance that tends to surround varicose veins. This protein like substance is called fibrin.  When too much fibrin collects it can cause blood clots. By eating ginger, garlic and onions regularly the severity of the condition will be reduced.

Omega 3

The omega 3 fatty acids really make a difference when it comes to blood flow and circulation. It improves both the tone and elasticity of the vessels. Make sure to include plenty of fish in your diet. If you are a vegetarian fish oils and flax seeds can fill the gap. Nuts, dates, dried fruit and raisins can also be a good source of omega-3.


If you are able to have a professional massage periodically, you will find that a trained masseuse will start at your feet and work her way up to your waist to promote circulation. If you can massage yourself it should be done on a daily basis, starting at your ankle and working your way up the thigh for about 5 minutes per day and remember to never massage the varicose vein itself.

The diet plan is a great start but there are also foods that should be avoided, like white sugar, carbohydrates and refined flour. Making small changes can make surprisingly positive effects on varicose veins.
